![]() ![]() ![]() Maybe I should be more willing to sacrifice my kids' and my own comfort in order to improve the overall situation? That's a tough ask of a parent. I realize all these things could change about cities if we do thing differently, but that's just not the reality right now. How does doing away with this type of zoning fix things? Couldn't people effectively enforce single-family zoning through township building codes and lot sizes? This might even raise the bar on who could afford a single-family home. I can see how that might be the case in some areas. On the social side of this, I've heard it stated that single-family zoning is bad/unfair/exclusive/etc. Taking young kids to a city park, social distancing, and keeping them away from no-maskers is frustrating, and sometimes impossible. Finally, the pandemic has made me realize how great it will be to have a backyard. Often, suburbs with fewer people and higher taxes have less crowded schools where the student-teacher ratio is lower. And again, not enough money for private school. Next up are schools- Philly city schools are mostly lackluster, barring a select few in expensive areas. Dense areas on the periphery of the city sometimes cost even more. I just need enough room to 1) work from home, 2) have us and kids not be on top of each other constantly, and 3) enable our out-of-town, elder parents to stay with us for short periods (and on the ground floor). I'm not looking for a grand ballroom to host parties. Money is a big factor- most big cities are untenable when it comes to money vs space. But my wife makes a good case to move us to the suburbs, and it's only reinforced with the continued pandemic. I have only ever lived in dense cities, and mostly in two of the top five biggest in the US, except for one year of my life when my parents moved us to the suburbs just before I went off to college. I'm not trying to troll or be inflammatory, I really do have honest questions about the overall hate for suburbs here.įirst, some background: I grew up in Philadelphia. ![]()
